Notes |
- John Kraft, "fourth and youngest son of John and Magdalena (Bechtel) Kraft, was born May 8th, 1824. On October 10th, 1848, he was married to Angeline, daughter of Morgan L. and Harriet (Babcock) Hermance. She is a twin sister to Mrs. Abraham C. Clemmer and was born July 2nd, 1828. After their marriage they moved on the west half of lot No. 112, German Company's Tract, about a mile east of Bridgeport, Waterloo County, Ontario. Here they resided until the beginning of March, 1874, when they moved to near Marion, Marion County, Kansas, where he followed farming until his death which took place September 16th, 1886. They had a family of twelve children, of whom six died in infancy."
Eby, Ezra E. (1895). A biographical history of Waterloo township and other townships of the county: being a history of the early settlers and their descendants, mostly all of Pennsylvania Dutch origin: as also much other unpublished historical information chiefly of a local character. Sketch of John Kraft, author and location unknown
John Kraft now deceased, the subject of this sketch, was born in Waterloo Co., Ontario,Canada, May 8,1824. He was of German and Pennsylvania Dutch parentage and was reared in his native birthplace. His death occurred September 10, 1886 and his passing was lamented by all who knew him.
Sept.10,1848, John Kraft and Angeline Hermance, a fine lady of German and Irish decent born July 2, 1828 at Beverly, Canada, were married and settled near his birthplace on a farm. He had purchased the land in 1868 and lived there at length, where he was well and favorably known in the county. He held the office of Township Treasurer for many years. John Kraft was a member of the Mennonite Church but he was not narrow-minded and could work amicably with other denominations. March 11, 1874 he came to Kansas and settled on Mud Creek, six miles northwest of Marion Kansas in Gale Township on a homestead . The Kraft family with two other families were the first Canadians to settle around Marion, Kansas. John Kraft was a farmer, devoting his entire time to farming exclusively, therefore he cultivated his farm to a high degree. Angeline Kraft, the widow, now resides on this farm which at his death was sold to D.L. Yeagley. The children left by John are as follows: Caroline Amelia--Mrs Richard Harold, Gale Twp.,Marion Co.,Kansas Hannah C. Snider-Mrs. Amos Snider May City , Iowa Angeline Elizabeth--Mrs Sam Kline, Clark Twp.,Marion Co.,Kansas Eliza Ann--Mrs D.L. Yeagley Gale Twp.,Marion Co., Kansas Charles Allen--Living temporarily in Canada
Harriet Matilda--a milliner and dressmaker living in Marion, Kansas
