Notes |
- Stricken At Jubilee Of Priest
The funeral service for Mayor Meinzinger, Kitchener’s colorful chief magistrate, who died last night, at 70, will be held, Wednesday. The mayor was stricken by a heart attack, while attending St. Joseph”s RC Church hall, the 59 anniversity of Msgr. Haller’s life, to the priesthood. He was dead on arrival, at St. Mary's Hospital. Prayers will be said at the Gruhn Funeral Home, at 9: 30 a.m., Wednesday, followed by solemn requiem high mass, at St. Mary's RC Church, at 10 o’clock. The body of Mayor Meinzinger, will be at the funeral home after 7 p.m. tonight. The rosary, will be recited at the funeral home tomorrow, at 8 p.m. The mayor suffered the sezure just after he had delivered a 10-minute talk, to praise Msgr. Haller, in whose parish he worshipped.
DREW APPLAUSE
He drew loud applause, with his concluding remark,"If I had to pick a City Council finance chairman, Msgr. Haller would be my man. Under him, he would have our city debt free, in 12 years." He then returned to his seat near the front of the packed hall, sitting between his wife and the monsignor. The Separate School glee club and orchestra started to sing and play the song, Moon River. Suddenly, the mayor put his hand to his head, then threw his head back and gasped. Msgr. Haller put his arm around the mayor's shoulders and eased him gently down on to the seats, arising to vaeate his seal. Mrs. Meinzinger, also stood up and the mayor was placed across the three seats. Meanwhile. Rev. Paul Driscoll, assistant priest at St. Joseph's Church, ran up into the church to get the oils needed in the last rites, of the Roman Catholic church. Helpers carried the mayor outside into the schoolyard, where Father Driscoll administered the last rites.
SOME UNAWARE
Msgr. Haller remained in the hall and many were not aware that anything had happened. Others believed, the mayor had fainted. The glee club stopped playing for a moment, then continued. Dr. P. J. Shark, a guest at the reception, hurried outside where be gave medical assistance. Mrs. Meinzinger, standing close by and seemingly composed, asked the doctor “He will be all right won't he” Dr. Sharkey replied, “We can't guarantee anything, Mrs. Meinzinger.” A moment later; when it was clear that her husband had dead, Mrs. Meinzinger broke down slightly. “I don't know what 1 will do without him.” she said. The colorful mayor, an insurance and real estate agent, until his retirement, several years ago, was born in Kitchener, son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Ignatius Meinzinger, immigrants, from Bavaria. He was first elected as alderman, in 1932. He returned in 1934 and served until 1939. In 1940, he won election as mayor, serving each year until 1945 He left municipal politics, to serve in the Ontario Legislature from 1946 to 1949. In 1958 he returned to municipal life as alderman, becoming mayor the next year. He was defeated in 1960 and returned in 1961 and 1962. In addition to his wife, the former Elizabeth Hummel, whom he married here, in 1917. He is survived by two sons, John of Kitchener and Robert of Toronto: a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) LaFIamme of Islington: two brothers, Stephen and Louis, both of Kitchener; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother and two sisters, predeceased him.
