________________
OBSERVES HIS EIGHTY SIXTH BIRTHDAY
BORN IN WATERLOO TOWNSHIP AND SINCE RESIDED HERE.
Interesting Reminiscences of Mr. Henry Lutz, An Aged Citizen Of the County Who Was a Good Carpenter.
Yesterday, May 124h, Mr. Henry Lutz, one of the oldest native, born residents of the township, Waterloo, attained the 86th milestone on life's journey. He was born just across the river from the present Wilkes Farm, where it borders on Grand river, and he has lived in the district practically all his life. Mr. Lutz is well-known among the builders and tradesmen of former days, having worked with and been employed by such men as Henry Livergood, Anthony Krehn, Anthony Bernhardt, Archie Bryden, Peter Ittler, Philip Jacob Detweiler, Lewis Kribs, Scott and Murray (Galt), Samuel, Levi and Amos Weaver, formerly of Berlin and Peter Lamont, who according to the words of Mr. Lutz, "the first real boss I worked for."
Some Things He Accomplished.
Mr. Lutz was the man who erected the North American Hotel in Preston now the Kress House. He also was one of the men who assisted in the building of the present House of Refuge in Berlin, in 1867, the contractors for which were Pabst, Holler and Kribs. The senior member; of this firm was Mr. Chr. Pabst of Hespeler, who, for many years, was a director of the Economical Insurance Company. Michael Holler, of Preston, the other partner, has since passed to the great beyond.
When the new parish house in connection with the Roman Catholic church at New Germany was built. under a contract secured by Mr. Peter Itter, Mr. Lutz had charge of the work in the absence of Mr. Itter. "Toney" Krehn was also on the force.
In Berlin, Mr. Lutz also worked on the Queen street mills, now owned and operated by Alderman Master. Mr. Reuben Bowman was then a side kick of his.
In speaking of the olden days, Mr. Lutz referred to his work in Galt, where he assisted in the erection of Knox church. Archie Bryden was the foreman for Mr. Lewis Kribs of Hespeler, who had the contract. Charles Moogk, now of Waterloo, was also on the staff. It was Mr. Lutz who cut and fitted and put up the fine pulpit on "Old Knox." It is constructed of black walnut, is all hand work, and stands to-day as it was first put up by him.
Some of His Old Acquaintances.
Among Mr. Lutz's old schoolmate chums were Rev. Jacob B. Bowman Rev. I. L. Bowman, a member of the teaching staff of the U. B. College at Freeport at that time. Rev. Jacob Bowman was the great "marrying preacher" in the early days, his home being visited by great "marrying hundreds of victims of Little Cupid's arrow. He was the father of Mr. A. O. Bowman, of the custom house staff. Mr. H. M. Bowman, of Church street, the well known literateur, is street, son of Rev. I. L. Bowman.
Others of his friends were Daniel and Elias Snider and Hubbard Corvell Moses Springer, all of whom have passed away.
Of those still living, who learned their A.B.C.'s with Mr. Lutz, are David, Moses and Noah Betzner, Ephraim Erb, one of Preston's fathers; John Cressman, Isaac W. B. Sherk, still and a number of who come to his mind.
Some of His Teachers.
Among the school teachers of the district where he attended school were Ben Burkholder, who taught at Centreville, after having been at Waterloo college; Abram Speicher who was such an excellent teacher that the Messrs. Erb engaged him to teach the school at Preston. Mr. Lutz remembers him very well. Two of his fingers on his right hand were missing, and he wrote with the other two and the thumb.
Mr. Lutz also recalls the cholera scourge of the "thirties" and can speak with interest of the under railway of the "Civil War" times, which were used to assist slaves to escape from the United States.
Some Legal Papers Drawn Up.
Early in the "fifties" he had occasion to have some legal documents drawn up and went to Mr. Ward H. Bowlby, who had shortly before located in Berlin. The other man in the deal was Henry Freeman, who, like Mr. Bowlby, had come here from of Waterford. Mr. Lutz was one Mr. Bowlby's first clients.
Speaking of his old time the carpenter days, Mr. Luez said to correspondent, "It is some satisfaction to to know that of all the bosses I worked for in all my life. I was never discharged for inefficiency or anything of that sort."
