Terribly Sudden Death
This neighborhood was shocked n Monday morning by a report that Mr. George Hall, of Sprague's Road, North Dumfries, had died very suddenly the afternoon before. Investigation proved the rumour only too true. The facts connected with the sudden and lamentable visitation are, that in the afternoon, with others, he was engaged in worship in the small meeting house in that section, that those assembled had engaged in services and had just taken their seats after singing a hymn in which Mr. Hall had heartily joined, when Mr. Andrew Elliott, who was sitting next to Mr. Hall, noticed the latter's head bent forward, as if he was going to slip, and on attempting to rouse him, he bent still more forward, gave a slight gasp or two and was dead. The utmost consternation prevailed, but though everything possible was done, it was evident from the moment of the first alarm that life had fled and that in a moment, without the slightest previous warning, the soul of this well-known resident, who had been in town the day previous, and who ten minutes before had apparently been in the enjoyment of as good health as many in the room, had been summoned to its Maker. A post-mortem was not held, and the cause of death is largely conjectural. Mr. Hall had been somewhat of a sufferer from asthma, but of late had been comparatively free of that distressing trouble. Of heart disease he had never complained or showed the slightest symptom. A few years ago he was troubled with the growth, in the nature of a wen, on the side of his head, with ultimately becoming annoying, he submitted to an operation for its removal, which, so far as appearances went, was completely successful. It is said, however, that after his death, the still unhealed wound resulting from the operation, bled severely, and from this the conjecture originates that death resulted from the bursting of a large blood vessel on the brain. Medical men incline to the belief that death resulted from the effects of asthma on his heart.
Mr. Hall was only in his 51st year. He had spent nearly all his life in this locality, and was widely known as a most energetic, industrious man, who had been very successful as a farmer. He was a kind man, and an honorable man, and had hosts of friends to whom the knowledge of his death will come as a shock. He leaves a widow and eleven children. Of his family all are at home except Mr. John Hall, and his brother, of Neepawa, Manitoba.
Mr. Hall's funeral took place on Wednesday and was an immense assemblage, being joined in by friends from Beverly, Waterloo, Galt, North and South Dumfries, Ayr and Blenheim.
