Notes |
- John William Maus - Passing of Native of South Dumfries Township - There passed away at his home in Ayr on Saturday, December 5th, at 10.30 o'clock p. m. John William Maus, in his seventy-sixth year. He was born at Dumfries, the son, Jairus Maus and Janet Tinling. His mother having died in his infancy, he resided with his grandparents, later settling on the farm now occupied by Mr. L. C. Vincent. Deceased was for many years a member of the Session of Knox church. At one time he was choir leader, and a member of the choir for many years. His work among the young people of the district will long be remembered gratefully by many who owe their interest in good music to his training. He was interested in all affairs of Church and Sabbath School, and the community in general. Mr. Maus had been an invalid for so many years that our younger people missed knowing a rare personality. He was a man of strong sincere character; upright and honouable in all his dealings in public and private a loyal friend and wise adviser; a peacemaker always; and his kindly counsel had been helpful t a great many. It has not been given to many men to exercise such quiet influence for good, and to inspire such profound respect and esteem in so wide a circle of friends and acquaintances. In 1886 he married Agnes Hall, who with a son, Jairus W. and three daughters, Janet, Laurie and Estelle survives him. One brother, W.D. Maus, of Glencoe, also survives. Mrs. Maus and her family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community in their bereavement. The funeral was held on Tuesday, December 8, at 2: 30 p.m., to the Ayr Cemetery. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. W. Currie. The pallbearers were: Messrs. David Brown, Murdo Lillico, William McRuer, Murdo McRae, Alex Hall and James Hall.
