Notes |
- James McIntosh
Born April 23,1826 in Woolwich, Kent, England to parents Peter McIntosh and Jane Urch
Enlisted in Royal Artillery Jan 12, 1839 aged 12 (note his father Peter had served in the RA as well)
Married Charlotte Wellard June 22, 1847 in Dover, Kent, England.
James and Charlotte's children were:
Thomas James McIntosh, Born Nov 7, 1847 Dover, Died Nov 16 1895 Bromley, Middlesex, England
Mary Ann McIntosh, Born Apr 17, 1851, Plumstead, Kent, England, Died Apr 28, 1911, Kingston, Ontario. This is person I68193 in your database
Henry Wellard McIntosh, Born about 1854. England and Wales GRO birth index indicates his birth was registered in St Germans Union Workhouse in Cornwall. I have ordered a pdf of the certificate to confirm this since he doesn't appear in the parish church register and there is no known family connection to Cornwall.
Charlotte (nee Wellard) McIntosh died Aug 12, 1858 in Woolwich, Kent, England
James was promoted from Gunner to Corporal in the Artillery while serving in Crimea. However, his army service record indicates he was AWOL for a time after Charlotte's death and demoted back to Gunner. It is my guess that he was absent trying to take care of his motherless children. Following his return to his regiment, he was deployed to China for a year. His youngest son, Henry, was living in a workhouse and then attending the workhouse school at about this time.
James McIntosh remarried Jan 6, 1862 to Elizabeth Jenkins
James and Elizabeth's children were:
Elizabeth Jane McIntosh, born between Sept and Dec 1862 in Greenwich, Kent, England
Alice McIntosh, Born Oct 15, 1864 Dover, Kent, England. This is person I65625 in your database.
George McIntosh, Born Feb 24, 1867 in Plumstead, Kent, England. This is person I90454 in your database.
James was honorably discharged from the Royal Artillery May 22, 1866
Elizabeth (nee Jenkins) McIntosh died Sept 19, 1868
James and children Mary Ann, Henry, Alice and George emigrated to Canada via the Serapis arriving Quebec City May 15, 1869. Children Thomas James and Elizabeth Jane remained in England. Thomas joined the Royal Artillery.
Not much is known about James' life in Canada. The family must have settled in the Galt area as Mary Ann married Alfred Hill Blackeby there in 1871 and Alice and George are in and out of the Berlin house of refuge. The latter suggests that James struggled to support his family.
James died Aug 29, 1888 in Guelph. A notice was published in the Guelph Weekly and the Galt Reporter.
Henry Wellard McIntosh
Henry married Elizabeth Lake Feb 5, 1877 in Kingston, Ontario. His Ontario marriage certificate incorrectly lists his mother as Elizabeth Jenkins, which is understandable given Henry's mother, Charlotte Wellard, died when he was 4 yrs old.
At some point between is marriage in Feb and his first child's birth later that year, Henry had enlisted in the army since the child's birth certificate lists father as a soldier in the A Battery in Kingston. Note that some children's birth records list Henry's middle name as Willard. It was Wellard \endash his mother's maiden name.
All but 1 of Henry and Elizabeth's 7 children's births were registered in Kingston. Richard Henry McIntosh's 1882 birth certificate shows the family living in Guelph with father Henry a blacksmith.
Henry's occupation is listed as blacksmith, soldier, coachman, Sexton of Chalmas Church in Kingston, and gardener on various census records and children's birth certificates.
Henry and Elizabeth made trips to Los Angeles where they may have had a second home later in life.
Henry died Jan 1, 1923 in Los Angeles, California
Elizabeth died Jan 24, 1938 in Toronto, Ontario.
