    • KRANZ, William George, industrialist, was born at Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Nov. 25, 1872, son of Hugo and Katherine (Seip) Kranz. His father was a merchant and insurance executive. Mr. Kranz came to the United States in 1890, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1895. He completed his preparatory education at the high school at Ithaca, N.Y., and was graduated M.E. at Cornell university in 1894. In his freshman and sophomore years he rowed on the Cornell crew and in his junior year played on the football team. Following graduation he remained at Cornell as an instructor in the mechanical laboratory until June 1895. From October 1895 to July 1896 he was superintendent of open hearth furnaces in the steel casting plant of the Midvale Steel Co, at Nicetown, Pa. He was superintendent of the American Steel Castings Co., Alliance, Ohio, from July 1896 to September 1898 and manager of the Morris & Bailey Steel Co., Clairton, Pa., from September 1898 to August 1899. On the latter date he became manager of the Sharon (Pa.) plant of the National Malleable Castings Co., Cleveland, Ohio. From May 26, 1914, to Jan. 1, 1938, he was vice president in charge of operations of all the plants of this company in Cleveland, Toledo, Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Sharon and Melrose Park, III. The company was reorganized in 1923 as the National Malleable & Steel Castings Co. He retired as vice president, Jan. 1, 1938, and since then has been acting as consultant to the company. Mr. Kranz was instrumental in the development of the Climax car coupler and the east steel anchor chain and the installation of modern manufacturing equipment. The National Malleable & Steel Castings Co, was the first to install an electric melting furnace for making steel castings. He is a director of the Sharon Steel Corp., and the Huron Road hospital in Cleveland. In religion he is a Presbyterian and in polities a Republican. He is a member of the Iron and Steel Institute, American Foundry Association, Royal Society of Arts, London, the Masonic order, Sigma Psi, the Cleveland and Chagrin Valley Hunt clubs of Cleveland and the University Club of New York city. His chief recreations are horseback riding and golf. He was married at Sharpsville, Pa., Apr, 16, 1902, to Alice, daughter of Walter Pierce, president of the Sharpsville Furnace Co., and has a daughter, Alice, who married Carl Louis Breithaupt.
