  • Notes
    • Henry Wideman, "son of John Wideman, was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1757. When a young man he joined the church of his choice, the Mennonite, and in course of time it was noticed that he possessed such talents that fitted him for the ministry, to which position he was ordained after being a middle-aged man. He was well liked and highly respected by all who knew him. Hearing of so many of his co-religionists moving from his and other counties of Pennsylvania to Canada, he, with his wife, family and others, followed their co-religionists and also moved to Canada in 1803 (They left their home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, May 16th, 1803, and arrived on the 8th Concession, Markham Township, York County, August 1st, 1803) and settled in Markham Township, York County, then all forest save a few clearings made here and there a year or so previously. Here they resided until his death (His death was caused by a tree falling on him while he was engaged in clearing away the forest on his farm) which took place June 24th, 1810. He was the first regular ordained Mennonite minister in Canada. A year later we find that one was ordained at the Twenty, Lincoln County, Ontario. Rev. Mr. Wideman's family (The family is not given in their proper rotation of birth) consisted of the following children"

Eby, Ezra E. (1895). A biographical history of Waterloo township and other townships of the county: being a history of the early settlers and their descendants, mostly all of Pennsylvania Dutch origin: as also much other unpublished historical information chiefly of a local character. Berlin [Kitchener, Ont.]: [s.n.].

*there is evidence to indicate that Henry was the son of Mathias Sabastian WHITEMAN b: 1727 in Durlach,Karlsruhe,Baden,Germany and Elizabeth MUMMA.
