Notes |
- When Kenneth Robertson, Dickson's stony-hearted, unrelenting agent went the way of all flesh in this strange land and married, late in life, the unbelieving tenants let loose in the chivari so riotously wild the magistrates were unable to control the demonstration.
A YOUNG CARPENTER FROM BUFFALO By Hazel M. Stockhouse (a tribute to Absalom Shade, Founder of Galt, Ontario.) article in Branch Notes, newsletter of the Waterloo-Wellington Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society 1990 Vol. 18. No. 3

His [William Dickson] office was at the west end of the bridge, and often presented a busy scene about the beginning of the New Year, at which time the settlers were expected to pay the instalments due upon their lands. Ever to be associated with this office must be the name of Mr. Kenneth Robertson * who, from a very early period, acted as Mr. Dickson's clerk and agent. This gentleman was of Highland birth, but unlike most sons of the Gael, possessed an unusually cold and calculating manner. The annual interview with him, therefore, was not an occasion which called up feelings of pleasure in the settlers' minds, particularly if, through unfavourable weather or other causes, they were unable to meet their engagements.
* It was probably Mr. Robertson's misfortune that he had often to perform the ungracious duty of insisting upon payments. However this may be, he was extremely unpopular, and always went by a nick-name so familiar as not to require repetition. He did not marry till well advanced in years, which was the occasion of a charivari, which produced the wildest excitement in the village for several nights, and which the magistrates were quite unable to quell.
