- Death of Sergeant Clay
Many of those who were connected with the volunteer movement in Galt nearly thirty years ago will regret to learn of the death of Sergeant Clay, who was drill-instructor of the Galt Companies in those early days. The Sergeant expired suddenly I the American Hotel, Guelph, on Monday afternoon last. He came to Galt after his discharge from the British army in 1857; and those of his "raw recruits" who yet remain amongst us will be able readily to recall the "dear, dear," of the old soldier as they got inextricably mixed up in some fancy movement. Mr. Clay made Guelph his head-quarters very soon after this, and has only paid occasional visits to the town. He was aged 73 years, and was much respected by all who knew him.
