    • Death of Mr. James Brown

The late Mr. James Brown was born in Roxboroughshire, Scotland, near Hawick. He came to this country in 1834, in June, and settled on his farm in North Dumfries, which was then all bush, and passed through all the hardships common to early settlers. In the early days of the settlement of this section of the Province, some of the more enterprising farmers engaged in teaming between Galt and Dundas and Hamilton, over the Dundas & Waterloo Macadamized Road. Among these were Mr. Brown, Messrs. Thomas Chisholm, William Hall, David Guthrie, D. McFeiggan, and many others. Much of the traffic at one time as far back a Stratford, and even Goderich, had to pass over this road to the head waters of Lake Ontario at the places also mentioned.

Mr. Brown first began with one horse, and brought oatmeal from Fergus to Galt, but gradually improved his position by his energy and industry, until he had four teams constantly going between Galt and Hamilton. He was always fond of good horses, and old residents will remember his famous chestnut race-horse Plenipo, which he used to run occasionally on what was then known as the Preston Lane, being the road leading from this side of Preston up towards Speedsville. It was about the only place smooth enough to run on in those days. One day a couple of Yankees arrived in Galt with two running horses, and stumped Mr. B. to run Plenipo. He promptly accepted, and the whole country for miles around was excited over the matter. There was an immense turnout on the race day and great excitement. Plenipo had been very fast, and had won a great many races; but he was no longer young, and had not been in training sufficiently long enough for the race, and the Yankee horse won, much to the surprise and discomfiture of the large crowd present, many of whom had come to regard Plenipo as a horse that could hardly be beaten in a short race. Mr. Brown must have continued teaming on the Macadamized road through the dreary, dismal Beverly swamp for about twenty years, and was quite successful.

The teaming closed in 1854, when the railway was opened to Galt. During most of this time he was a Presbyterian, but about the close of his teaming days, he became strongly impressed with what was then known as Morrisonianism, which was the teaching of the Rev. Dr. Morrison of Scotland, who favored a mild form of Arminianism as opposed to the Calvinistic view, of the Atonement. In this, as in everything else he took up, he advocated the Morrisonian view with intense energy and zeal; going about for a time with his Bible in his hand among his Presbyterian friends, endeavoring to prove to them that the Morrisonian view was the correct one. Later on he came to adopt religious views entirely un-Orthodox, and these he continued to hold until his death.

Mr. Brown devoted much time and means to stock-raising, and as a breeder he was most successful. His herd of Shorthorns was known far and wide. He carried on farming operations till quite recently, when failing health compelled him to dispose of his farm and stock, and retire from active pursuits. He was possessed of a kindly, genial disposition, and was strictly honorable in his dealings with his fellow-men.

Deceased was married to Jane Dryden, sister of Messrs. Jas. and Walter K. Dryden, who passed away some ten years ago. Their family consisted of six sons and six daughters, of whom, two sons and two daughters, are dead.

The surviving family are: Mrs. Scroggie, Galt; Mrs. John Fraser, Mrs. Currie, North Dumfries; Mrs. William Bell, South Dumfries; Andrew, Preston; Thomas, South Dumfries; Alexander and Walter, North Dumfries. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, to the old Ayr Cemetery, being attended by a large concourse of friends. The oration was delivered by Mr. Wm. Algie of Alton.
