  • Notes
    • I have emailed you before about this Robert Green and possible connection with my Eliza Green (born ireland, lived Scotland, her descendents ended up in OZ). I have investigated your Robert Green (all records I could find online) and my Eliza Green PLUS ended up tracking a John Green (who also appears on your website). All three of these people list their parents as John Green and Margaret Wallace. Tracking through all three people's records in various countries (Ireland, Scotland, Canada) I have come to the conclusion that these three people are siblings. This is what I have found:
John Green married Margaret Wallace 17 October 1828 Ballyhea, Cork, Ireland. Margaret can be found with some of the younger children in 1841 scottish census in Ochiltree, Ayreshire, Scotland. She is born in county but none of her children are. No husband (John) listed. She is listed as a straw milliner(?). Margaret is deceased by 1855 marriage of son John (as per his marriage record), as is father, John. I am currently assuming father John is dead by 1841. Their children:
      1. Eliza "Sandem" (as listed on dc) Green baptised 16 Aug 1829 Ballyhea, Cork Ireland. 1841 scottish census is working as a servant in Ochiltree, Scotland. All her census information lists her birth place as Ireland. Marriage & death certs list parents as John Green and Margaret Wallace.

      2. Margaret Green. b. abt 1831 from 1841 scottish census, living with mum Ochiltree, Ayrshire, Scotland.

      3. Agnes Green. b. abt 1831 from scottish census, living with mum. d. 24 Apr 1846 Ochiltree, Ayrshire - killed apparently.

      4. John Green. b. 22 Jan 1836 Cork Ireland (as per marriage certificate which also states his birth was not registered). 1841 scottish census living with mum at Ochiltree, Ayrshire. 1851 census working as a farm labourer Ochiltree. 30 Nov 1855 marries Jane Lawson at Monkton and Prestwick, Ayrshire Scotland (lists his residence as Ochiltree and his parents Margaret Wallace & John Green, both deceased). First child Margaret born abt 1856 Scotland. Then immigrates to Canada where 2nd daughter, Agnes is born in 1858, followed by Robert 1860. Appears in Canada censuses from 1861 onwards (Waterloo region, Huron North, Saskatchewan) and has lots more children. His records in Canada indicate born in Ireland but origin as Scottish. Which makes sense, ie he was born in Ireland but came from Scotland to Canada. I think you have this John Green on your website but not "linked" to Robert.

One assumes that the family moved from Ireland to Scotland between these two child births (perhaps because dad died? And mum moved back to county and country of birth?)

      5. Robert Green. b. abt 1837 Glasgow, Lanarkshire (have not yet found birth record in Scotland but it may not have been recorded based on information found on brother John). 1841 census living with mum in Ochiltree, Scotland - not born in county. 1851 census is working for a Cothier Master in Ochiltree, Ayreshire. Must immigrate before 1859 (perhaps with brother John and his wife & child?) as he married Jane Brown 14 Oct 1859 Waterloo, Ontario (he is now a merchant tailor, lists his parents etc). You have the rest of the info on this bloke.

I am continuing on searching for this Green family - in particular the deaths of John Green Snr and his wife Margaret. Interestingly a number of the children's records (Eliza and John) list the deceased father John Green Snr's occupation as a gardener.

The first great fire in Galt took place in 1851. The buildings on Main Street were then chiefly wooden, more especially on the south side where the long and handsome Granite Block now stands. The fire broke out in the store carried on by one McKinnon, and soon all that portion of the street was in flames, The fire engines were worked with a will, but they were powerless against such a mass of flame as soon arose. Messrs Peter Cook, Alex. H. Mowat, R. McKinnon, Andrew Elliott, John McVenn, Robert Wallace all well-remembered names were among those burned out on the occasion. *

*The Granite Block which replaced these buildings was abo destroyed by fire in 1862. The fire originated from a barrel of Naptha in Fleming A Robinson's grocery, and in consequuence of having a lighted lamp brought too close to it. It occurred about seven o'clock on Saturday evening, the 31st May, 1862, and the fire spread with unprecedented rapidity. The following shops were destroyed: Fleming & Robinson, groceries; John Fleming, books and stationery; William Frier, dry goods; John Orchard tailor and clothier; R. S. Strong, drugs and chemicals; William Kerr, boots and shoes. Besides these establishments, the buildings of Mr. Robert Wallace, and the stocks of Messrs. W. H. Job, Wm. Prest, Angus Polson, Taylor & Green, and George West, were injured by removal, or otherwise. The losses were very heavy
