Fatal Accident on the Rail
For a day or two past a very painful rumor has prevailed in town to the effect that one of the Detwiler's, of Doon, had been killed on the G. W. Railway, near Jordan station. Notwithstanding anxious enquiries, we have so far failed to obtain full particulars; but the report now is that the unfortunate man was named Henry Detwiler, and that his death resulted from his being caught by a train on the bridge near Jordan station. It appears that a number of persons had gone to the camp ground at Grimsby for a day or two, and that when they arrived at Jordon station the deceased and two or three others attempted to reach the grounds by way of the railway bridge crossing an inlet at that point. We believe they were cautioned at the time that the express was due, but the caution had no effect, and they started to cross the bridge. When about half way across, the train overtook them, and, while his companions succeeded in getting out of its way, the deceased was run down and received such injuries to his head that he expired in about an hour. These are the particulars as far as we have been able to ascertain them.
Since the above was written, we learn that the deceased was unmarried, and was between 65 and 70 years of age. He resided a short distance above Preston, and was possessed of some means.
