  • Notes
    • A VETERAN GONE. Another one of of the old pioneers has departed this life, John Welis, at his residence 3rd Concession of King, on the 18th of December last, aged 86 years and six months. He served in the Militia during the war of 1812-14 and was at the engagement of Queenston Heights, and saw General Brock fall. He received a medal for his services in that engagement. When the Government some two years ago gave pensions to the surviving veterans of the above war he received his portion with the rest. He was married twice and leaves now a widow and six children living. He has also left forty-six grand grand children and thirty great grand children; these with one daughter, the late Mrs. Lot Hartman, and seven great grand children who have died, making a total of no less than ninety. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church, but through feebleness he was unable to attend church for a number of years. His funeral took place from the residence of his son J. P. Wells, ex-M. P., and was attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances. The funeral services were conducted at the house by the Rev. Mr. Grant and at the Cemetery by the Rev. Mr. Dick, of Richmond Hill. Thus one by one the men who toiled and fought to give us our glorious and free country are passing away and soon there will be none of those noble, self-sacrificing pioneers left. [Newmarket Era.]

Mr. Wells was a grand-father of Dr, John Norman of this place.
