    • Ex-Inspector Sheppard, 84, Dies Suddenly

The death occurred in Toronto yesterday afternoon of Frederick William Sheppard, 84, former public school inspector of North Waterloo, after whom Sheppard School here was named. A resident of Kitchener during most of his life, he died suddenly as a result of a heart attack. Mr. Sheppard was born in England, and came to Canada as a child. His family moved to this area when he was a boy, and he received his schooling in Kitchener.

      STARTED IN 1884

The earliest record of his teaching here lists the date of 1884, at which time he instructed at the Berlin Colligate Institute. He taught at that school until 1904. The deceased was then appointed a public school inspector. Until 1913 he was assistant to Thomas Pearce, whose inspectorate included all of Waterloo County. It was in 1913 that the inspectorate was divided into North and South Waterloo. Mr. Sheppard was named North Waterloo inspector, while Lambert Norman, still living in Ayr, was appointed inspector for South Waterloo. Mr. Sheppard continued in this position until he retired in 1927, and was succeeded by R. H. Roberts who later left here for York County. Although his whole life was built around the teaching profession, Mr. Sheppard was active in sports, particularly soccer. He went to England one year with the Kitchener team, and also played in the United States at one time. It was at St. Louis, Mo., that he was injured in a soccer game, and it was as a result of this injury that he walked the rest of his life with a limp.

      ON CHURCH BOARD

He was a member of Trinity United Church here, and served as a member of the board of that church. It was on the death in 1935 of his wife, the former Elizabeth Hunt that he moved to Toronto, where he died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. E. McNinch of 314 Glen Manor Drive. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by one son, John R. Sheppard of New York City, and six grandchildren. The remains will arrive from Toronto Friday morning, and will rest at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home from where the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. E. 0. Seymour will officiate. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
