  On August 3, 1879, a small group of women met in the church to begin an organization known to us today as our Ladies' Aid. After the pastor's brief devotional address, based on the 14th chapter of Mark, " all sisters present offered earnest prayer for the gracious presence of the Lord. The object of the organization, as stated in the original constitution, was to unite the women of the congregation more closely in well-doing through prayer, gifts, and deeds of charity." The first officers elected were: Mrs. Catherine Breithaupt, president: Mrs. Anna Staebler, vice-president; Mrs. Mary Moeller, secretary, Mrs. Mary Kaufman, treasurer. With few interruptions this organization has met once a month with changing leadership and changing membership even unto the present date. Unchanging, however, has been its purpose of helpfulness where opportunity offered\emdash visiting the sick and the new arrivals in the community, sewing for the needy, supporting hospitals and charitable institutions far and near, contributing to missions, supplying religious literature for local institutions, providing supplies and repairs for church and parsonage, presenting the communion set, etc., raising money for various church budgets, enlisting support for worthy causes and enterprises, acting as hostesses to the church's guests, etc., etc., etc'. One year, in addition to its other accomplishments, the Aid finished over one hundred quilts for the Red Cross Socciety. 100th Anniversary, 1839-1939, Zion Evangelical Church, Kitchener, Ontario ___________ Zion Evangelical Church The Rev. J. J. Kliphardt formed a Ladies' Aid Society in 1879, A History of Kitchener, W. V. (Ben) Uttley, Kitchener, Ontario 1937 ____________ The Rev. C. F. Kliphardt, pastor of the Evangelical Church, returned to Jewell a week ago Thursday evening after attending the funeral of his brother, J. A. Kliphardt, who was killed in New York and buried in Chicago. His brother was in the employ of a paper handlers and exporting firm. On the evening of Dec. 31,1920, at the close of the day's work as he was getting ready to leave his place of employment, he was struck down with an iron bar by a drunken man who worked in the same building but on another floor and for another firm. The slayer with a companion had begun to get ready for New Year's celebration by drinking, and in his drunken craze either satisfied a lust to kill by striking down the first man whom he met or mistook Mr. Kliphardt for some one against whom he held a grudge. The bar struck Mr. Kliphardt on the right side of the head and was delivered unexpectedly from behind, giving him no chance of self-defense. Those closest to the tragedy declare the blow was not intended for Mr. Kliphardt. The wounded man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, N. Y., where he lay unconscious until the night of Jan. 5. 1921, when he died. The slayer was not immediately captured but word was received on January 17 that he had been raptured and was being held without bail for a hearing January 19. The results of this hearing is not yet known to the Rev. C. F. Kliphardt, though his parent in Chicago have probably received word. The firm for which Mr. Kliphardt worked, the paper handlers union, of which he was a member, the church and young peoples society to which he belonged, all gave evidence of the high regard in which he was held by letters of sympathy and floral offerings.
