- A Short Sketch of Mr. J. G. Buchhaupt.
It was just one week ago Friday that Mr. J. G. Buchhaupt the popular chairman of the Berlin Public School Board celebrated the 25th anniversary of his wedding, his fellow members of the Board making it the occasion of a presentation of a handsome silver water set to him and his good wife. Mr. Buchhaupt affords us a striking example of what can be accomplished by persevering industry.
Mr. Buchhaupt was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany, emmigrating alone to Canada when a lad of fourteen years. He spent some years working as a mason and then entered a furniture factory in Walkerton, where by rigid economy he managed to lay aside sufficient of his earnings to enable him to take a half interest in a small German weekly newspaper, which he, in company with the late Casper Hett started in 1886 under the name of the "Freie Presse." He was only at the newspaper business a short time however when he decided to open a shoe shore on King St., in the present Weseloh stand. Here he carried on business with marked success for ten years, selling out to Mr. Weseloh a few years ago, to engage in a manufacturing business, but from this he was compelled to retire on account of ill health. Naturally a gentleman of his disposition and temperament could not remain long inactive and he has since opened up another shoe shore on Frederick street where he is doing a good business, Mr. Buchhaupt has been in public life only a few years but in that time has occupied the highest positions in the gift, of his fellow citizens. He has been councillor and for seven years a member of the School Board, being elected chairman at the beginning of the present year. It was mainly through his efforts and influence some years ago that it was decided to hold the election for school. trustees at the same time as the annual. municipal elections thereby effecting a considerable saving to the town.

________________
A VALUABLE CITY OFFICIAL CALLED
SANITARY INSPECTOR J. G.
BUCHHAUPT PASSED AWAY Served the City for a Quarter of a Century
Over the city hall to-day the flag droops at halfmast. One of the city's veteran servants has passed away. Sanitary Inspector J. G. Buchhaupt was called from this life at 12.30 o'clock this morning at his home on South Albert Street after an extended illness.
Mr. Buchhaupt had been ailing for about two years but during that period the affliction which finally overcame him had indications of passing and he being restored to his normal good health. Five weeks ago he was compelled to again refrain from his work and to remain at home. During the last three weeks he was confined to his bed and his condition gradually became more and more unfavorable. Saturday and Sunday turns for the worse and better alternated. At about 6.30 o'clock last evening another turn for the worse came from which there was no rally and at 12.30 o'clock this morning he passed peacefully across the Great Divide.
Long Service to the City
By the death of Mr. Buchhaupt the city has lost an official whose services to the community were above the mediocre. For a quarter of a century he conscientious and eager to help in the public good, performed those civic duties which centred in the city hall but which had their influence throughout the whole city. The school board of which he was at one time chairman, the municipal council, the water commission, the offices of assessor and sanitary inspector all were filled by him during the past twenty-five years. He had the assessorship for five years. Eight years ago he was appointed sanitary inspector This office like all other municipal posts he filled with, satisfaction to the community. The officials of the city hall, those with whom he was associated in the performance of his duties and the individual citizens with whom he was in personal touch in looking after the needs of the poor and others in distress, to-day bear testimony to the worth of the deceased. A bereaved wife and family have lost a beloved husband and father. A city feels the loss of one of its pillars of citizenship. His memory will ever be green.
The late John George Buchhaupt was born in Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, sixty-six years ago. When only fifteen years of age he came to this country with relatives settling here immediately. He learned the trade of chair-maker in a furniture factory at Listowel. For years he was employed in the old Simpson, factory on West King Street, which is now the Rieder block.
Subsequently Mr. Buchhaupt conducted a boot and shoe business operating the Montreal Shoe Store where the Weseloh Store now is. Later his place of business was on Frederick St. After retiring from business he devoted his attention to municipal and civic offices. He was a valuable member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
A coincidence in connection with Mr: Buchhaupt's death is that it occurred on the forty-fifth anniversary
His wife, Catherine Weber, survives him. There are also left to mourn his passing, two sons and one daughter, Harry and Fred of this city, and Marie at home.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday. The cortege will leave the residence at 2.30 o'clock for St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow in the East End Lutheran Cemetery.
