Notes |
- GAMMIE, Robert Bruce MD, Physician and Surgeon Passed away on August 2, 2016 at Guelph in his 97th year. Born on the family farm outside Elora, Dr. 'Bob' Gammie started his family practice in Hespeler in 1946 and was into his fifth decade of practice before he retired. Dr. Gammie was predeceased by his wife Jean Gammie (nee Stickles), his daughter Frances Ditschun (nee Gammie) and his sister Marian Fair. He will be greatly missed by his children Doug (Donna), Craig (Wendy), Joan (Dave), Bruce (Lisa), Kay (Dave) and Fran's husband Art. 'Poppa' will be fondly remembered by fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is survived by his sister Mildred, his brother Grant, and his sister-in-law Evelyn, who will miss their weekly visits. Bob attended the University of Western Ontario, where he earned his medical degree. He was also a Captain in the Canadian Army. Not knowing how long the war would last, the army kept him and others in school through graduation and the intern year because they needed doctors. He met Jean during his intern year while she was in nursing college at Hamilton General Hospital. They married and settled in the small village of Hespeler in 1946, where they raised a family of six children. Hespeler was just a small distance away from the Ariss farming area he loved, and a good place to set up his practice. During his medical practice there were many baby deliveries, and much work patching up, stitching up, and healing of war veterans, hockey players, factory workers, store keepers, tradesmen, homemakers, and their families for the small but growing community. He also served for a time as the Medical Officer of Health for Hespeler. Bob and Jean both enjoyed Scottish country dancing. He always managed to carve out time each year at the family cottage where he enjoyed swimming, fishing, canoeing; and especially, sailing on his Albacore sailboat. Good sailing, Dad. Bob's family invite family and friends to attend a Memorial Service at St. Andrew's Hespeler Presbyterian Church, 73 Queen St. East, Cambridge at 1 p.m., on Sunday, August 14, 2016. Funeral arrangements entrust to Lounsbury Funeral Home, Cambridge.
