- Death of Mr. George Bruce
This well-known resident of this section died at the residence of Mr. George Ford, near "Little's corners," North Dumfries, on Tuesday afternoon last. For some weeks Mr. Bruce has been very unwell, having had apparently two slight attacks of paralysis. During the last few days he sank rapidly.
Mr. Bruce came to Canada from Roxboroughshire, Scotland, in 1832, settling at once on the farm near "Bruce's Ponds" in North Dumfries. He resided there until about twelve or thirteen years ago, since which time he has lived with his nephew, Mr. Ford. Mr. Bruce was simply another of the noble type of settlers to whom the Township of North Dumfries owes so much, and to whom too much credit can not be given. During all the struggles of his early life he retained, and to the day of his death retained, the same geniality and warm heartedness which seemed bred in his nature, and through all his life, carried with him the esteem and warm friendship of almost every one in this section. Possessing an excellent knowledge of all breeds of live stock and taking a great interest in the improvement of the herds in this Province, Mr. Bruce rendered signal service as a member and Director of the Agricultural Society and as Judge at shows throughout a large section of western Ontario. Very reluctant to take the position, his skill and thorough honesty of character caused him to be eagerly sought after, and his decisions were implicitly relied on and never questioned.
With Mr. Bruce's death the direct family may be said to end. His brothers, William and Adam, predeceased him, the last a few years ago, neither leaving children, and the deceased although married - his wife being the sister of Mr. Thos. Rutherford and the late Charles Rutherford, of North Dumfries - had no children, his partner dying many years ago.
