  • Notes
    • In 1886, Dr. McIntyre sold out the drug business to Alex. G. McBean whom I remember quite well, and he continued until 1891 and then sold to Wesley M. Kirkland. And in that same year or the year after, Mr. John Phin bought the property from Ventry Conway as an investment. Mac. was a tall, well built athletic man, always wearing a smile and in business, very wide awake. He knew all the kids by their first names and all the kids were special friends of his.

      Just a dandy fine fellow.

As John Zryd had done before him, he soon came to realize that he was not getting enough farm trade because the farmers were buying their drugs in the larger towns around.

So he had himself made hundreds of tin boxes, 61/2 x 61/2 inches, three inches thick, with a nice hinged lid which were labelled on the outside

      "McBean's Family Medicine Chest."

Pasted to the inside of the lid where it could be seen when the lid was lifted he had another label showing the contents of the box and the price of each item. This is a copy:

      Pain Killer 25 cents

      Cough Syrup 25 cents

      Worm Syrup 25 cents

      Soothing Syrup 25 cents

      Lightning Oil 25 cents

      Healing Salve 25 cents

      Liver Pills 25 cents

      Condition Powders 25 cents

      Toothe Ache Drops 10 cents

      Castor Oil 10 cents

      Court Plaster 5 cents

These Medicine Chests were put into houses far and near without charge or obligation. When anything they contained was needed the householder took it out and used it, and periodically McBean's man would come around and refill the Chest and collect at scheduled rates for the items that had been taken out. I was told that an amazing amount of business was developed by this plan.
