• Notes

  A sad death occurred here last Sunday morning, when Mr. Carl Herz departed this life after having been the victim of paralytic stroke, which resulted in a rapid decline of his strength. Deceased came to Elmira about 3 years ago from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, leaving his family in Europe until such time that his means admitted of bringing them over the ocean. He found employment in the local furniture factories where he worked industriously and saved his earnings, contributing them to the expense of passage for his wife and children who arrived here on later occasions. Two grown-up sons also left the Fatherland to join the family and since last fall the entire family have lived together in a house on Queen St. which they had purchased. After having thus assembled his loved ones, the departed was not permitted to long enjoy usual robust health having during the last year desist from work fully nine months. He sank gradually until it became apparent that he would not be long a pilgrim on this earth. He was 58 years 9 months. His earthly remains were interred in the Elmira Union Cemetery. Rev. Graupner of St. Paul's Lutheran Church which the deceased and family had joined conducted the ceremonies. The bereaved have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their affliction.
