Notes |
- SCHMIDT, GEORGE was born in York County, the fourth son of the Reverend Wilhelm Schmidt, and came to New Hamburg in childhood. Presumably he was educated in local schools, and then, according to the Berlin News-Record, was engaged in teaching school in Berlin. He attended the University of Toronto Medical School, graduating with honors in 1874. While he was a student he gained experience working in Dr. Bowlby's office.
He practised first in Sebringville, taking over in the fall of 1874 the practice of Dr. Aaron Eby, who was moving to Berlin. After five years he moved to New Hamburg where he practised for nine years, with an interlude in Galt. The Dumfries Reformer of April 20, 1881 had his card:
Dr. G. Schmidt. Graduate of Toronto School of Medicine and Medical Council. Several years experience. Office for present at Eby's Hotel, Main Street. (Galt).
Subsequently there was a note in the Berliner Journal that Mr. Mowat and Dr. Schmidt had withdrawn from the Dumfries Reformer, the former to take a position with the Toronto Globe, and Dr. Schmidt to devote himself to his medical practice.
On September 18, 1890, the Reformer copied from the New Hamburg Independent that Dr. A. Nichol had purchased the practice of Dr. G. Schmidt.
When he left New Hamburg the Volksblatt said:
Dr. George Schmidt and his wife left New Hamburg on Friday to journey to Milwaukee, Wis., where he intends to pursue his profession. In the time that the Doctor lived here he earned the esteem of all, and had a very lucrative practice. The Doctor also took an active interest in educational institutions and had frequently taken the political platform in support of educational matters. The Doctor and his wife are accompanied by the good wishes of the entire community, . . . (September 2, 1891)
At some point, probably between the sale of his practice and his departure for his new location, he appears to have acquired a degree from a New York medical school. The Milwaukee Journal on July 19,1901 said: He graduated from a Toronto college and from a medical college in New York."'
He practised in Milwaukee from 1891 until his death there at age 54, on July 18, 1901. He was survived by his widow.
The Volksblatt said of him, in part:
(he) was for many years a popular and respected resident of our town. He was regarded as a favorite and skilfull physician by the residents of our town and the surrounding area. . . .
