- DEATH OF MR ALEX ROY.
It is our sad duty today to chronicle the death of Mr Alexander Roy, for many years a prominent figure on the streets of Berlin, and recently employed at Stuebing & Smith's wholesale house. He has been in ill health for a number of years' past, suffering from bronchial asthma, but was able to be around and until very recently. He was out for short walk on Wednesday last, since when he had remained indoors. He suffered very little pain.
Deceased, who was 58 years of age, was born in Scotland and came to Canada when but a lad, having called it his home for the last 45 years, He was first employed as a clerk in a store owned by Mr Fischer in Waterloo, and ventured out in business for himself along with Mr Huber in the stand now occupied by Mr C Sugarman. After retiring, he was engaged by Mr J A Mackie in his store, where he faithfully served his employer's interests for ten years. He was always obliging and attentive, and was a great favorite with the public. In 1881 be opened out a grocery store in the stand recently acquired by the Merchant's Bank, which he carried on for a few, years, when failing health compelled him to withdraw. Latterly he was engaged at Stuebing & Smith's, he having served with Mr Smith when both were boys. He was a faithful worker in Presbyterian church and one of the oldest members, having served an Elder for 25 years. He also served the town as a Councillor for several terms, and always had the town's best interests at heart.
He was never married, his sister keeping house for him. He was one of a family of twelve children, two sisters and a brother being in the United States, William in Toronto and Mrs Wm Metcalfe in Berlin. The funeral obsequies of the late Alexander Roy were held on Wednesday from the family residence, Victoria St., to Mount Hope cemetery and were very largely attended. The Rey Dr Torrance, of Guelph, conducted a very impressive service at the house.
The relatives present from a distance were Mr G Aldred, Toronto, Mr W Roy, Toronto, Mr A R Metcalfe, Pasadena, Cal, and others. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and included among others a cross and anchor frem the Elders and a wreath from the Managers of St Andrew's Church, a wreath from Mrs W H Aldrich, a cross and anchor, from Mr and Mrs J E Neville and a ba,quet from Miss Metcalfe.
The pall bearers were Messre Robert Smyth, Richard Ried, Wm Stuebirg, Jr. John Smith, John Moffatt and R McIntyre.
