Notes |
- Former Doon resident dies in Montana at 110
A native of Doon, Mrs. Rose Wasman died Saturday in a nursing home in Great Falls, Montana. She was 110.
She was the sister of Oliver A. Rummer, 96, of 843 Hamilton St., in the Preston section of Cambridge. His son O. L. Kummer, also of Cambridge. has flown to Montana for the funeral which will be held Wednesday.
Believed to be Montana's oldest woman. Mrs. Wasman was born Jan. 20. 1866, in Doon, near Kitchener, and was one of four girls and seven boys in her family.
In 1889, she married Louis Wasman near Galt, Ont., and they both came by train to Montana as tourists.
They chose to settle in Great Falls, Mont., then moved in 1893 to a ranch near Sand Coulee, Mont.
Mr. Wasman died in 1945 and Mrs. Wasman operated the ranch alone until moving back into the city two years later.
She gave up horseback riding at 82 and abandoned show shovelling at 99.
At 104, she received a letter of congratulations from President Richard Nixon for being the oldest resident in her social security district.
Interviewed on her 100th birthday, Mrs. Wasman attributed her long life to a steady diet of meat, potatoes and vegetables. She said she never drank milk.
