Notes |
- Mr. JAS. SCRIMGER, One of the Oldest Pioneers of Dumfries, Passes Away, Aged 92 Years.
Another old resident of Dumfries, has passed away in the person of Mr. Jas. Scrimger, whose death occurred on Sunday morning at a few minutes past 12 o'clock, at his residence near the Toll Galt, on the Stone Road. The deceased in addition to being one of the oldest, if not the oldest person in the county, was one of its first settlers, he having first taken up his residence here nearly seventy years ago. The few who knew Dumfries in that distant time, have been, almost without an exception, called long since to join the great majority and the death of the late Mr. Scrimger severs one of the last links that connect the past, with the present. The deceased, who was one of a family of twelve, was born in Invernessshire, Scotland, in the year 1803. When he was about four years of age, the family left the old land and emigrated to the United States, settling in Johnston, N. Y. Some seven years later they removed, this time going to Caledonia, in the same state. This continued to be the home of the deceased, until he reached manhood, when, in the year, 1825, he, accompanied by the other members of the family, came to Canada, finally taking up land in and around where Galt now stands. Shortly after leaving the States, he was married to Miss Jane Keachie, of Dumfries, who predeceased her husband some twelve years. The farm on which the deceased originally settled, is now known as the McMillan Farm. After residing on the place for a number of years, he sold the farm and shortly afterwards, became keeper of the Toll Gate, which position he filled for a number of years. He then removed to his farm, adjoining the Toll Gate and here the remainder of his life was passed. Eight children were born to deceased, but of the one son and three daughters, who grew to manhood and womanhood, only the son, William, survives him. His brother and sister, who are still living, are William, of Cobourg, Ont. and Mrs. A. G.Y. McPherson, who, resides with her son, Mr. Malcolm McPherson, East River Road. In politics, the late Mr. Scrimger was a staunch Reformer and although never taking an active part in political matters, he always evinced interest in the welfare or his party. In religion, he was a Presbyterian. Although having past through many years; of trial, hardship and trouble, the deceased was, as far as health was concerned, a well man up to a few days before his death. Two weeks prior to his demise, Scrimger walked to town and the many friends who saw him on that occasion hoped, from his hale appearance, that he would be spared for some time to come, notwithstanding his great age. As a man, the deceased was respected by all and his death, although occurring long after the allotted span of three score years and ten was past, will be learned with regret by many. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from his late residence, near the toll gate, to Mt. View cemetery.
