Notes |
- THE LATE JAMES S. COWAN
There passed away at Dr. Cowan's in Guelph, on Saturday, Sept. 29th, James S. Cowan, one of the most prominent and highly respected residents of North Dumfries. The subject of this notice was born near the Yarrow Selkirk Shore, Scotland and came to Canada, with his father in 1829. The family settled on the farm down the East River Road now owned by his brother, Mr. William Cowan. Afterwards he went to work for the Hon. Wm. Dickson, taking charge of his farm and place, being a young man of great activity and industry. It was not until it was wholly or nearly paid, that he settled on the farm at Altrieve lake. It was then, like almost the whole township, covered with heavy timber, but his industry soon turned it into the fine, cleared farm it is today. He was married in 1832, to Miss Ann Mathieson, who is yet well remembered for her genial, warm hearted disposition. She died in 1879, having lived 47 years after their marriage, leaving a family of eight children; James who died in 1891; Jennie (Mrs. Dalgleish) who died in 1883: Walter S., Dr. W. R. Cowan and Mrs. Geo. McEwan, of Guelph; Mrs. W. K. Marshall, of Clifford; Miss Annie and Alex. N., at home. Mr. Cowan's sickness had been of about. 1.5 years duration and his trouble had become so painful his medical adviser thought it necessary for him to undergo an operation. This took place about, a week before he died and although performed skilfully, his constitution proved not to be strong enough to bear it and he passed away on Saturday, as stated above. Mr. Cowan's death snaps another link which binds the present to the past, and which will soon, leave Dumfries without, one single one of the brave men and true who tackled its forests, over hall a century ago. He was widely known and universally respected as a good citizen, who had well discharged his duty in all the relations of life. He had reached his 84th, year and the immense funeral on Sunday last, testified to the respect in which himself and family are held.
