Notes |
- John C. Powney Passes
Funeral service was held on Monday at the W. O. Ball Funeral Home for John Charles Powney, 91, one of Ayr's oldest and most respected citizens. Interment was made in Cedar Creek Cemetery on Highway 97, North Dumfries. Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan officiated. Pallbearers were Robert Henry, Blyth; William Henry, Palmerston; Robert Coughlin, Preston, Dennis Meggs, Paris; Earl Elliott and Vernon Ventham, Ayr. The late Mr. Powney, who passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Friday, was born in Birmingham, England. He came to Canada aboard a sailing vessel at the age of 15. His first employment was in a blacksmith shop at Belmont and he continued an active life of labor from this young age until failing health forced him to retire some years ago. He worked for many years with the CPR in construction and later contracted with Canada & Dominion Sugar Company for a lengthy period. He moved to Ayr in 1930. While here he operated a successful market garden business for many years, and took pride in the fact that he was always the first to market early potatoes. Mr. Powney was deeply interested in municipal affairs and served several terms on the municipal council. He was an adherent of Knox United Church. Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. J. W. (Gladys) Rogers of St. Marys, Mrs. Vernon (Ruth) Ventham, Ayr, and Mrs. William M. (Merle) Henry of Blyth. Six grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by his wife 18 years ago.
