    • Is there anyone who is planning a trip to the Ontario Archives? I am trying to find out if a will (estate file?) was filed for an individual. Looking at their site I'm not sure I would have much luck having film sent to me. The person I am looking for is Philip Livingston. He died November 18, 1872 in Galt, Canada. I do have a will for his son-in-law Dr. Robert Reid from 1874 where he is mentioned. Philip had a son, Robert Livingston, who resided in a mental hospital in Galt, which leads me to believe something may have been written down providing for his care. Our only missing link after many years is an "official" document linking Philip to the previous generation and hope names verifying the connection may be mentioned in a will. I would appreciate any help if someone is planning a trip to the Archives. Will be pay costs for time, travel and other charges. Leslie Minneapolis, Minnesota ..... Unfortunately, there is no record of Philip Livingstone having left a will. I note in the 1871 census that he is living with Robert Reid and that he is a bookseller and stationer, so it is unlikely that he owned any land that we could check for a copy of a will. Wills in which land was the only asset were often filed with the land registry office, and not with the surrogate court.

In 1850, he is living in Ohio with his wife (born Jamaica) and his son, Robert (insane, born West Indies). It would seem that the clue to solving your problem would rest in the records of Jamaica or some of the other islands. In fact, I found a passenger record in 1842 arriving in New York aboard the Brig, Lady Mary, which sailed out of Kingston Jamaica: Livingston, Philip, aged 44, farmer, of United States, intend to become inhabitant in U.S. Livingston, Robert, aged 26, gentleman, b. Providence, intend to become inhabitant in U.S. Not listed with them, but further down the same page: Livingston, Mary, aged 46, of Jamaica (and two children, aged 8 and 6). So, it would seem that you need to find a marriage in Jamaica or the children's birth in Old Providence.
