Police are asking for the public's help to piece together the last days of a man found dead Sunday at a Woolwich farm.
Waterloo regional police made an appeal yesterday to anyone with information about the 49-year-old man's activities or associates.
They released a photo of Robert Allan Rempel in hopes someone might recognize him and come forward with information that sheds some light on the mystery surrounding his death. "We don't know a lot about Mr. Rempel," Insp. Bryan Larkin said yesterday.
"We're really looking for people to come forward to help us paint a picture of who this person was."
Police say Rempel, who had no fixed address, was known to frequent Kitchener and Stratford, and his only family members live outside the province.
After speaking with some of Rempel's associates in Kitchener, police now believe he had been living in Guelph for the past few weeks, said Adrian Darmon of the homicide branch. "We're trying to retrace his steps," he said. "We believe he was in Guelph up to the time his body was discovered."
Further complicating the investigation is the fact that Rempel went by the nickname "Animal" and may not have told people his legal name, he said.
Rempel's body was found Sunday afternoon at the doorstep of a farmhouse on St. Charles Street West in Maryhill.
The owners of the farm, a rental property, had come to prepare the home for new tenants when they saw the man lying lifeless in front of the home and called for help.
Rempel was pronounced dead at the scene. Police haven't said how long his body had been at the farm.
Police say what Rempel was doing at the farmhouse is a mystery. He had no connection to the owners.
There was evidence of trauma to his body, though investigators wouldn't go into detail.
"All I can say is we were able to observe trauma on the body," Darmon said.
An autopsy was completed in Hamilton, though the results were inconclusive. More tests are being done, though results could take some time.
Police consider the death "suspicious," and members of the homicide branch are investigating.
Officers were back in Maryhill yesterday collecting further evidence, though police said the farm isn't linked to the cause of death, Larkin said.
"We know that there is no connection to that property," he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the homicide branch at 519-650-8500, ext. 8669, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
