    • Cattle Breeder S. G. Sims, Dies Aged 83

      Samuel George Sims, 83, of Stonewall, Man., known for his work with Holstein-Friesan cattle, died Saturday in Stonewall- Rockwood health unit hospital.

      Mr. Sims was born in Galt, Ont. At the age of three, he came to Manitoba with his family, travelling by boat and stagecoach, and settled in St. Boniface. His father was in the woollen business.

      The family farmed near Argyle where Mr. Sims received his eduication. Later he served as reeve of Woodlands. He farmed in the Argyle district until 1916 and during this period he began his work with Holstein cattle.

      Mr. Sims was responsible for bringing Canary Korndyke Alcartra, holder of a world butterfat record, to the west. He is reported to have developed the early dairy queen, Ruby Nig, and to have master-minded the building of the Crerar herd of Manitoba and the Selkirk Mental hospital herd.

      During his active career, Mr. Sims held the posts of agriculture representative for the Winkler region, local manager of the Holstein Western Livestock corporations for the western region, Manitoba director of the Holstein-Friesan association of Canada for 12 years, and president of the association in 1930.

      Mr. Sims judged Holstein cattle from the eastern boundary as far west as Vancouver Island.

      Surviving are his wife Mary Luke: a son Sam who is an architect with the Manitoba government; a daughter Gail of Stonewall; two brothers, W. H. Sims of Winnipeg and Harvey Sims British Columbia.

      Funeral service was Tuesday in the United church, Stonewall, with Rev. G. Wiznuk officiating. Burlal was in Stonewall cemetery. A. D. MacKenzie funeral home, Stonewall, was in charge.
