• Notes

  George Avery White (1820-1885) He was born in Northumberland, England in 1820. He married Mary Ann Brown of Galt, Upper Canada, and they had eight children. He came to Galt in 1836. He learned the flour-milling trade in Sloan's Mill, Upper Canada. On 6 June 1873 the family left for Manitoba, travelling over the Dawson Route. They reached Fort Garry on 17 August, and proceeded to Portage la Prairie where they settled east of town. White entered the service of Robert Watson as the first flour miller west of Winnipeg. In 1882 he acquired land at Oakland. He was a Liberal in politics and a member of the Presbyterian Church. White died in 1885 Pioneers and Early Citizens of Manitoba
