Notes |
- Death of an Old Settler - We have this week to record the death of John Smith, one of the earliest pioneers in this neighbourhood. The deceased was a native of Roxburghshire, Scotland, and emigrated with his family to this country fifty years ago, when Galt contained only a few houses and the surrounding neighbourhood was almost an unbroken wilderness. Deceased took up land on Sprague's Road, about three miles from Galt, where he was widely known as an industrious and very successful farmer, and much esteemed by all who knew him. He occupied the farm till about eight years ago, when he sold his property and removed to Galt, where he lived till the time of his death, which took place on Wednesday ? He had attained the ripe old age of 83 years.
