Notes |
- GILCHRIST, MARGARET (Nee Wilkinson)
Another of the Puslinch pioneers, on Wednesday morning at 8: 30, September 11, 1912, at her home in Puslinch Township, in the 75th year of her age (74 years, 11 months, 19 days), after a short illness of pneumonia. She was born in Tarbert, Argyleshire, Scotland in 1837. She came with her family in 1853 and nine years later, married Peter Gilchrist and settled on lot 10, rear concession 1 of Puslinch, where she resided until her death. Her vigorous constitution enabled her to attend to her household duties until a short time before her death and she declined, receiving every attention that a husband and an affectionate family could give. Besides possessing the qualities that endeared her to a large circle of friends and relatives, she and her husband were eager students of Gaelic literature, of which she possessed a large library. At her fireside, the visitor was sure of a genial welcome and genuine Scottish hospitality and the wayfarer never went hungry from her door. She was well known in the community, as one of the kindest and best, in a community noted for the hospitality and kindness of its people. Her unexpected death is much regretted by a very wide circle of friends. On Friday afternoon, Sept. 13 at 2, a large gathering paid the last tribute to her memory. Service was conducted by Rev. J. L. Small of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Hespeler, from her residence to the quiet Killean Cemetery, where so may with whom she shared the joys and sorrows of pioneer life have preceded. Pallbearers: Marshall Ferguson, Malcolm Wilkinson, Jacob Cooper, John Robertson and John Gilchrist. Survived by John W. of St. Catharines; Mrs. Angus
McCormick of Crieff in Puslinch; Janet of the Guelph Public School staff; William A. of Weyburn, SK; Davina, at home; Mrs. (Rev. ) John McKenzie of Elkins, West Virginia; and Mrs. Andrew Leishman of Paris.
-Additional information handwritten on her funeral card:
Her father and mother, Neil Wilkinson and Davina Gardner, are buried in Harriston Cemetery. Her brothers, Ronald and William Angus were buried in the Old St. Andrew's Cemetery in Galt; John in Harriston; David, Allan and Alex in Florida; Neil in Bristow, Butler Co., Iowa. Ronald died Sept. 24, 1858, 26 years, 5 days. William Angus died March 6, 1861, 16 years, 9 months. Her oldest sister, Jane, is buried in Killean, Kintyre. Her oldest living(?) sister, Jane, was buried in London, England; Christina on the Isle of Skye; Janet in Arthur; Mary in Ridgetown; and Davina in Harriston, with her father and mother, her brother, John and an uncle of their mother's, Ronald McTavish, who always lived with them, who was 84 the day they landed in Quebec and 96 when he died.
