- Former MPP, city and regional councillor Gary Leadston dies at 72
By Catherine Thompson
Longtime Kitchener and regional councillor Gary Leadston, who also served as a Conservative MPP, has died at age 72.
Leadston died Monday of pancreatic cancer in his home in Rideau Ferry, Ont., about 100 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, where he had lived with his wife, Anna, since 1999.
Leadston, a Guelph native, moved to Kitchener in 1960 and was first elected to Kitchener city council in 1978, where he served for 16 years. For 14 of those years he also served as a member of regional council.
During his years in municipal politics, he pushed hard for the construction of Lackner Boulevard and the construction of an indoor pool at Stanley Park, and voted to build a new Kitchener City Hall and regional headquarters, and supported the erection of the clock tower in Victoria Park.....
