Notes |
- Andrew Malcolm was born in Killearn, Sterlingshire, Scotland on May 7, 1810 and immigrated to Canada in 1832, settling first in Toronto, then York, and arrived in Galt in 1834. Not long after his arrival the cholera epidemic that killed about twenty percent of the village's population broke out in the town. Mr. Malcolm is listed among those who provided assistance to the sick and dying and in burying the dead. Mr. Malcolm had apprenticed as a joiner in Scotland and upon his arrival in Galt went to work as a carpenter for Thomas Chapman. Among his first jobs was assisting in the building of the "Old Kirk", Galt's original St. Andrews Church. In the mid-1840's he started a contracting, furniture and cabinetmaking business in partnership with John Barbour and within a few years was operating one of the leading businesses in the area. Among his more important building projects was the building of the Commercial Block for Absalom Shade. The building, erected on the south west corner of the intersection of Main and Water Streets, in more modern times housed the Canadian Bank of Commerce, later the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Mr. Malcolm made a limited contribution to local politics sitting on the Galt town council in 1858. He died on December 26, 1898 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery. Malcolm St. is named in his honour.
