DEATH OF MR. JOHN HENDERSON, OF GALT
On Monday morning this aged and most worthy man passed to his rest at the residence of Mr. James Welsh, his brother-in-law, in Waterloo. Mr. Henderson went out a little over a week ago to spend a few days with his old friends and was taken ill. Without apparent suffering he gradually grew weaker day by day, until on Monday last, he passed most quietly and peacefully away. He was aged 75 years.
On the 28th of October of last year we noted the celebration of the Golden Wedding of the aged couple of whom only the wife, beloved by all who know her, remains. From our remarks then we take the following extract: - "Mr. Henderson was born near Jedburgh, Scotland, in the year 1813, while his father was serving in the militia during the ever memorable campaign which terminated in Waterloo. He served his apprenticeship as a mason and stone-dresser with his father, and in 1832 he thought he could better himself in Canada, and landed in Galt in that year, a very different Galt, however, from the town of today. The only places of note then in the hamlet were Simpson's tavern, Andrews' distillery and Shade's mill. He at once began working at his trade, his first job being dressing the hearth-stones for Mr. Shade's fire place. After remaining in the village for some time he took up the farm in West Dumfries now occupied by Mr. Scott; but this he shortly afterwards sold and removed back, to the villager, where he remained till 1841, when he took up land in Waterloo Township, where he also took contracts; and many of the old mills and houses in that township bear the marks of Mr. Henderson's handiwork. He afterward removed to the south-west corner lot in Waterloo Township, where he remained until about three years ago, when he returned once more to his early Canadian love - the town of Galt.
During all the ups-and-downs of a pioneers life - during all the struggles of their early years - Mr. Henderson had in his wife a true and earnest helpmate, and one who took her full share of the hardships of life in a new country. She was a light alike in the dark and dreary days that come to all, as well as in the bright cheerful; and there are many yet alive who can bear testimony to her many kind words, as well as still kinder deeds, which brightened their struggles years and years ago."
