    • An Old Resident Gone

The death of Mrs. Alex. McDonald, Beverly street, which was announced a day or two ago, removes one of the most esteemed and widely known residents of Galt. Deceased had last fall, what is known as a bad turn, but under skilful medical treatment she recovered. On New Year's Day, she met with a most unfortunate accident by falling on the bedroom floor, breaking her leg at the thigh. Since then Mrs. McDonald, has been in poor health and about two weeks ago, she was taken seriously ill and passed away on Friday night last. The late Mrs. McDonald, who was in the 71st year of her age, came of a good Highland Scotch family. Her maiden name was Isabella Robertson and she was the daughter of the late Duncan Robertson, one of the early and most respected yeomen of Glengarry County, being born in Martintown, a thriving village of that county. Deceased came of a large family, there being seven daughters and four sans. The scenes of her early days were spent at the old homestead and on the 23rd of June, 1852, she was married by the Rev. Mr. McLaren, to her now sorrowing husband, Mr. Alex. McDonald, one of the oldest and widely known residents of Beverly Township. The subject of this sketch and her now bereft life-partner lived an unusually happy and contented wedded life for a period of nearly forty-three years, until death removed the faithful mother and wife. Immediately after the union Mr. and Mrs. McDonald took up their residence in Beverly, where they lived until some fifteen years ago, when they removed to Galt, to reside. The deceased lady was from childhood a member of the Church of Scotland, worshipping at the old church in Galt, until its disestablishment some seventeen years ago, when she joined the United Presbyterian Church and to the day of her death, she was one of its most devoted and conscientious members. A brother of the deceased's, Duncan, died in Woodstock, a short time ago. The surviving brothers and sisters are, Alexander Robertson, who is in South America and Hugh Robertson, of Glengarry County. Mrs. McDougall, a sister, resides in Winchester, Ont., while the four remaining sisters are all residents of their native county, Glengarry. A family of two sons and three daughters are left to mourn the loss of an affectionate mother. The sons are D. A. McDonald, of Galt, and J. F. McDonald, of Cleveland. The daughters are, Mrs. Alex. McKelcan, of Beverly and Miss Jane and Catherine, residing at home. The deceased lady was a woman of most kindly disposition and marked hospitality. She leaves numberless friends who will sympathize with the father and family in her sad decease. The funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon, to Mount View Cemetery, was largely attended, many old friends from Beverly and the surrounding country turning out to to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed, The solemnities were conducted by Rev. Dr. King and the pallbearers were Messrs; Dunn, Jackson, Jas. Woods, ex-Mayor Lumsden, A. Ferguson and Daniel McPherson, of Glen Morris.
