  • Notes
    • At a meeting held in Elora on Nov. 7th, 1839, a committee of three - William Reynolds, Andrew Geddes and David Gilkison - was appointed to carry out this project. The frame work was put up by John Gafney, William Day and Joseph Huxtable; the plastering was done by Thomas Irvine and the carpenter work by Henry Wilbee. While this was being done each member of the committee used his influence with friends and their appeals were generously responded to. Altogether the sum of two hundred and eleven pounds was raised. Thirty-five pounds of this was placed at the disposal of the committee by the Rev. Arthur Palmer to whom it had been entrusted. He was an Episcopal clergyman, living in Guelph, who had, as a missionary, occasionally visited and preached to these English settlers. That the leading spirit in this work was Mr. Reynold's mother is shown by her letters to her son urging and encouraging him to persevere in this work. Besides the money which at different times she sent as her own contribution, the following extract from one of her letters is interesting as it mentions who some of the other contributors were.
