Memorial to young boy to be erected in Kitchener
      November 23, 2009

KITCHENER - Monday will mark 25 years that Doris Hynes's five-year-old son was hit by a transport truck.

The boy died three days later in hospital of massive head injuries.

To commemorate the anniversary of Steven Vale's death, a memorial will be erected in the area where he was hit which is now a green space near a small park at the end of Gordon Avenue at Lancaster and Mansion Streets in Kitchener.

"It's a big milestone," said Hynes, through tears, recalling her eldest boy at the time.

Vale was walking home from Suddaby Public School where he was in kindergarten when at the corner of Gordon Avenue and Mansion Street he was hit by a transport truck.

The truck driver was turning right from Gordon onto Mansion. At the time, Gordon Avenue went to Mansion. It was closed after Vale's death and is now a cul-de-sac.

Hynes said the truck driver took off and she was told about the hit-and-run when one of the two boys that were walking with Vale came to Hynes's Luella Street house and told her that her son was lying dead on the street.

The truck driver was never charged.

Hynes, 51, who now has two adult children, 21 and 25, recalls how the years after Vale's death were difficult.

"If I didn't have a seven-month-old at home to take care of, I would be in the nut house," said Hynes, who later moved from the Kitchener neighbourhood to a farm house in Bloomingdale.

Hynes said with time she has accepted Vale's death. But there are moments of deep sadness especially when she sees small children walking to school, when she drives by the intersection, and speaks to friends or family members who are now 30 and would be the same age as Vale.

Hynes said she decided she wanted to mark her son's death and contacted the city's parks and recreation department about erecting a memorial in the green space. The city agreed and the memorial will be installed on Nov. 28.

The memorial, in an area of about eight feet by eight feet, will be made of armour stone and will be in the shape of the letter V. A small plaque with Vale's name will be placed on the stone.

Hynes choose a V because of the v's in her son's first and last name.

Hynes is paying for the cost of the stone and hopes to fundraise some money by organizing a dance at the Army Navy Air Force Veterans club on Gage Street in Kitchener on Nov. 28 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling Hynes at 519-585-0188 or at the door.

At the dance, Hynes will have a scrapbook and photo album of Vale's life that she put together over two years.

"It was like therapy," she said.
