Notes |
- William Fischer, a respected and appreciated citizen of our small town passed away at home in his sleep after lengthy suffering and weakness due to old age. The deceased first saw the light of the world on 27, May, 1834 in Oehnsbach, Baden, Germany. At the age of one year he came to Canada with his parents. Their first home in this land was near Dundas. Later his parents acquired a farm at Strasburg. After he grew up the departed passed exams to become a teacher and shared his knowledge for two years in the school at Williamsburg (near Berlin) and then he devoted himself to agriculture. On November 6th, 1855 he married Ottilia Braun who at the age of seventeen emigrated from Oehnsbach. The young couple lived on a farm south of Strasburg and in 1881 moved to Chepstow. For approximately the last 15 years he was retired in Chepstow. In 1905 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. Of 17 children, 12 are still living, Joseph in Guelph, Peter and Elizabeth (Mrs McNab) in Chepstow, Maria (Mrs Waechter) in Formosa, George in Berlin, Anne (Mrs Lang) in Chepstow, Sister Rita Paul and Sister M. Irene in Buffalo, John in Montana, the Very Rt. Rev. Anthony in Waterloo, Lena (Mrs Dietrich) in St. Agatha, and Jacob in Michigan. All except two sons from the United States attended the funeral. The solemn requiem funeral service was held Friday morning in the Catholic church. The very Rev. A.J. Fischer lead the service and was assisted by the Rev. P.J. Meyer from Mildmay (Deacon) and the Very Rev. R. Haller from Waterloo (Sub Deacon) and the Rev. A. Montag from Diemerton (Master of Ceremonies) and the Very Rev. J. Cummings from Walkerton gave the eulogy. The Very Rev. J.J. Gehl from Formosa also took part in the service.
We would like to express our deepest sympathy to all those left behind.
