Found photos and documents detail the life of an Italian immigrant family

KITCHENER - Laird Robertson was in the middle of renovating an old building on King Street East when he found a tin box under an old stairwell that was packed with documents and photographs.

The contents detail the life of an Italian immigrant family \emdash Michael Pinto and his wife Rose \emdash in early 20th-century Kitchener. They built a store on a vacant lot at 243 King St. E. in 1929 to sell fresh fruits and vegetables. Michael, Rose and their two daughters lived in the apartment upstairs.

When the daughters Victoria and Caroline were old enough, their father encouraged them to get into the garment business. He figured it had advantages over the fruit and vegetable business. Michael knew firsthand the demands of the produce trade, rising at 3 a.m. and driving to Toronto for fresh product every morning.

The daughters decided they would sell children's clothes. Victoria and Caroline are remembered to this day by former customers of Pinto's Youth Shoppe. Long after the last sale and closing of the store, an elderly woman was often seen outside, doing her best to maintain the property.

That was Caroline, the last surviving member of the Pinto family in Kitchener. Her emotional connection to the family's only real home in the New World remained strong years after she moved into a residence on nearby Queen Street.....
