    Bowman House built in 1840 by Henry Bowman on the north east corner of King and Erb Streets and was initially known as the Farmer's Hotel. In 1867 directory lists William L. Bowman as the proprietor. In 1882 it was bought by Henry Zimmerman and eventually the name was changed to Zimmerman House. A fire in 1889 destroyed a major part of the front facing King Street. It was rebuilt and a third floor added. In 1889 the Canadian Bank of Commerce opened an office on the main floor.
    In 1904 it was bought by Mark Lewis and was renamed the Lewis Hotel. in 1935 it was opened as the Hotel Waterloo.

Also written along the bottom of the print is: This picture taken about 1881. A note with the print states: Bowman House * H. Zimmerman * Propreitor: This picture was taken about 1881 and shows the Preston-Berlin-Waterloo stage in front of the hotel. The driver was Henry Wolfe.

  • Notes 
    • Henry Zimmermann, a respected citizen of Waterloo, died Thursday morning at 2: 00 o'clock, after a long illness. He was born July 14, 1837 in Spechbach, Baden, Germany and came to this area in 1845 and settled near Bamberg. He carried on the carriage trade there and opened a business. In 1882 he acquired the Baumann house in Waterloo and in 1890, constructed the Zimmermann house on the same spot. He gained general respect through his pleasantness and honesty. He is survived by a sorrowing widow, a son and 10 daughters, of whom five are married. The burial took place on Saturday afternoon with a large attendance.
