Notes |
- In 1881, the Sauers began emigrating to North Dakota. Andrew's brother Joseph and wife Catherine homesteaded a quarter of section 26 of Potter (Township 140, Range 60) in 1881. Andrew was married in 1882 to Amelia Flack, and farmed in 1883-5 with brothers Jake and August, and with brother-in-law John Flack, also recently from Mildmay, Ontario. They also farmed on Section 26, renting from Ole J. Moe. Section 26 is directly on the northeast corner of the intersection of 94 and the Sanborn Road.
Andrew and Amelia are listed in the 1885 Dakota Territory Statehood Census as living with one-year-old son George, Andrew's brothers Jake (24) and August (21), and Amelia's brother John Flock (23). In that census, the "cannot read or write" boxes are checked for Andrew and George. In 1887, Andrew homesteaded in Section 4 of Hemen (Township 139, Range 60), three miles north and two miles west of John Sauer's homestead, and received patent five years later, on May 26, 1892. Andrew and Amelia, or Emma as she was called in the 1900 census and 1910 census, had nine children.
