    • CLAUS KOELLN PASSES AWAY IN 100TH YEAR

Waterloo's Oldest Citizen Enjoyed Excellent Health and Was Active Almost to the Last

Klaus Koelln, one of Waterloo county's oldest and highly esteemed pioneers, passed peacefully away at his home in Waterloo on Friday night, at the age of 99 years, 8 months and 18 days. Deceased enjoyed excellent health up to two weeks ago when he was taken ill, and many friends will regret to learn of his passing. A large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral which took place from the family residence on Monday afternoon. Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery. The late Mr. Koelln was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, in 1830, and when 24 years of age emigrated to Canada, landing in Quebec in 1854. He proceeded to Hamilton and later to Preston. The following year he moved to Waterloo where he has since lived. He married Anna Yahn and their union was blessed with ten children, five of whom survive, namely, Henry and John of Michigan City, Indiana, Julius of Grand Rapids, Mich., Matilda and Annie (Mrs. S. Sheppard) at home. His wife predeceased him some years. The late Mr. Koelln was a building contractor, and it is interesting to note that he built the steeple to the St. John's Lutheran Church and the large addition to the Central School. He was a faithful member of the Lutheran church.
