      Mrs. Dorethea Monk Dead. Leaves 10 Children, 65 Grandchildren and 92 Greatgrandchildren.


      Mrs. Dorethea S. F. Monk, of Elmwood, widow of the late William J. G. Monk, departed this life on Thursday of last week, Sept. 6, 1923, at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 22 days.

      She was born in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, on July 4, 1832, emigrated in 1853 and landed at New York after a 3-months voyage across the ocean. From thence she went to Preston, Waterloo county, where she was married to Mr. Monk, who had come from Germany on the same schooner.

      For nearly seventy years, they lived in Bentinck and Brant townships. Together with her husband she has done a lot for the building up of this country, has helped to open the way for the prosperity of Canada and the welafire of her children.

      She leaves a family of ten children as follows: Martin, Joseph, John, Mrs. Ben Haase, William, and Mrs. Theo. Wiechmann of Brant tp., Herman of Hanover, Mrs. Amos Haase and Fred. of Bentinek, and August of London. There are 65 grand-children and 92 great grandchildren, all living, mostly in the vicinity of Elmwood. Wm. and Charles Wendorf of Hanover are brothers.

      Deceased was a faithful member of the Lutheran church of the Canada. Synod, where she received last honors in a funeral service by hundreds of mourners, to whom Rev. E. Gomann preached the sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Elmwood.
