  • Notes
    • TALMON HENRY RIEDER, President of Ames, Holden, McCready, died at week-end at the age of 43, following the an attack of pneumonia. Those in close touch with this boot and shoe organization " were aware of the heavy load carried by the new president during the past couple of years, and this, it was believed, seriously undermined his health. It is doubtful if any industry in Canada has had to face a similar disorganization, and has, been as long awaiting recovery. Mr. Rieder's early activities and, indeed, the greater part his life, were connected with the rubber industry rather than that of boots and shoes. He was many years connected with the Canadian Consolidated Rubber Company, which had a factory in Kitchener, Ont., near where Mr. Rieder was born, and where he was educated. He rose rapidly until he was president of the Consolidated Rubber Company, and of the Canadian Consolidated Felt Company. When D. Lorne McGibbon retired from the presidency of Ames, Holden, McCready, Mr. Rider, who had associated himself with this business a short time before, became president. He developed in a short time several of the lines with which he had been connected in the other, company, the manufacture of automobile tires, felt footwear and rubber footwear, and all three of the new lines were showing satisfactory progress at the time of his death.

LAST RITES FOR LATE T. H. RIEDER

Preliminary Funeral Service Held at Residence Yesterday Afternoon

      DIED EARLY SATURDAY

Was President of Ames Holden, McCready, Limited - Burial at Kitchener, Ontario

Funeral services for Talmon Henry Rieder, president of Ames-Holden McCready, Limited, who died on Saturday morning, were conducted yesterday afternoon at his late residence, 610 Belmont avenue, Westmount. Afterwards the body was taken to Bonaventure Station and placed aboard the Grand Trunk train leaving at 7.30 o'clock, to be conveyed to Kitchener, Ontario, where interment will take place tomorrow A special Pullman car was attached to the train, and carried the members of Mr. Rider's family, who proceeded to Kitchener in charge of the body.

The service was conducted at the residence by Rev. S. E. Marshall, pastor of Dominion Methodist Church, of which congregation Rieder had been a member. Mr. Marshall spoke feelingly of the character and worth of the deceased. There was a gathering of intimate and business friends at the funeral. some of whom proceeded to Bonaventure Station. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. H. W. Binning, S. J. LeHuray, W. B. Weigand, J. M. S. Carroll, Charles Russell and Huge Wellein. Rieder had been suffering from pneumonia, but had, apparently passed the critical period and was proceeding towards recovery. Complications, which eventually affected the heart, set in, and death came at 8 o'clock on Saturday morning.

Mr. Rieder was born New Hamburg, Ontario, August 10, 1878, and was, therefore, 43 years of age. He was the son of Peter and Emeline Rieder, his mother being formerly Miss Merner. His education was obtained in the public and high schools at Kitchener. He spent practically all of his business career in various phases of the rubber industry and was particularly successful in merchandising footwear. Mr. Rieder also developed his knowledge of organization and financing and rose to the presidency of the Canadian Consolidated Rubber. He afterwards became associated with AmesHolden-McCready, Limited, and was president of that corporation, and was also president of its subsidiary organizations. Ames-Holden Tire and Ames-Helden Felt.

Mr. Rieder married Miss Martha Anthes. daughter of John S. Anthes, who survives with four children. Miss Margaret and Miss Helen Rieder, and Edward and Paul Rieder. Other relatives who survive are a brother, Elmer Rieder, of Kitchener: and six sisters. Mrs. Wood, wife of Dr. E. Wood. Kitchener: Miss Della Rieder, Pittsfield. Mass.: Miss Esther Rieder, Montreal; Miss Rieder, Boston. Mass., and the Misses May and Alma Rieder, of Kitchener.
