Description: obit translated:
Canadische Volksblatt, December 15, 1886
With Death departed
On the 11th of December, Jakob Ritz, co-distributer of this paper. The deceased was born the 27th December 1842 in Petersheim, district Cusel in the Rheinkreis, Kingdom of Bavaria. Shortly after his confirmation he emigrated in the year 1855 with his parents to America. Within the same year he entered an apprenticeship as printer with the departed Mr. Doctor Boullee and thereafter with Mr. Joachim Kalbfleisch, editor of "Bauernfreund" (farmer's friend) in Waterloo.
On the 8th of December 1868 he entered into the state of holy matrimony with Miss Marie Bockner of New Hamburg, where he was for some time Foreman in the print shop of Mr. Otto Pressprich [unreadable] later with lastly in [unreadable] met. From his marriage [his wife gave] him 8 children of which one in the year 1878 preceded him into the hereafter. Even though he appeared to be of robust constitution he suffered for some extended time from a heart ailment. Always upbeat and friendly in dealings with his fellow men, no one could have predicted his untimely end.
Last Friday he was accompanied by his wife while handling business dealings in the neighboring city of Tavistock but already felt himself unwell.
Last Saturday late morning he wanted to return to work however stopped to speak with Mr. Doctor Schmidt because he was feeling worse. The doctor suggested that instead of going to work he should get himself to bed, which he did. In the evening at 6 o'clock he was a corpse. One can only imagine the sorrow of the family and the surprise of the citizens of New Hamburg as the news went from mouth to mouth: Jakob Ritz has died. His burial took place on Tuesday the 14th of December at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with an unusually large attendance of his many friends from near and far at the city cemetery of New Hamburg.
Those of you that walk in mourning
Farewell you dear friends
Whatever blows down from above
Will comfort the Lord's congregation.
Don't cry over the fancy appearance,
Only above it can be eternal.
Don't cry that I want
From this world to take my leave,
That I want to leave this confusion,
Leave the shadows, leave the limelight,
Leave the vain conceit, leave this nothing,
Into the land of eternal light.
He who has fallen asleep reached the age of 43 years, 11 months and 14 days and left behind other than his sorrowing widow and 7 children, also his parents and 8 brothers and 2 sisters.

Our old and esteemed friend Jacob Ritz, of the Hamburg Volksblatt, passed away very suddenly on Saturday last. On the previous day he had been paying a visit to some friends in Tavistock and on his return complained of a slight illness but nothing serious was thought of the matter. On Saturday morning, however, he grew worse and a physician was called in who prescribed for him and left instructions that he was to be sent for again in case any change took place. Early in the evening Ritz was noticed to be laboring severely and the physician was sent for, but before his arrival the vital spark had fled. The funeral services took place on Tuesday last, nearly the entire population of the village turning out to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. Nith Lodge, I.O.O.F., of which Mr. Ritz was an active member, turned out to assist at the services.
A very strange circumstance in connection with this sad affair was that the face of the corpse bore such a life-like look and all the appearances of the body were so natural that the family refused to have him interred that day. On Wednesday all hope of a return to life was given up and the remains were quietly deposited in mother earth at 10 a.m., only a few of the more intimate personal friends of the family being present.
