- Local News Items: Mr. Ed. Laschinger, son of Mr. Sol. Laschinger, of the Elmira foundry, has passed his examination at the Toronto School of Science with honors, and first in his class. He has just been called to a situation at Niagara Falls, as assistant engineer at a high salary.

DIED IN SOUTH AFRICA
Word has been received of the death of Edgar J. Laschinger in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the age of 65 years. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Laschinger, of Elmira, and was wellknown in New Hamburg where he spent many of his boyhood days, being a nephew of the late postmaster, Jacob Laschinger.
The late Mr. Laschinger went to South Africa in 1896 and played an important part in the mining engineering problems of the South African mining district. He graduated as B. Sc. at the School of Practical Science, Toronto. He was a fellow of the University of Toronto and later received post-graduate degrees in mechanical engineering.
On his arrival in South Africa Mr. Laschinger joined the Goldfields Corporation. He was intimately associated with the Vierfontein Syndicate and earlier hydrographic surveys in the Transvaal.
In 1909 Mr. Laschinger joined the iRand Mines as assistant mechanical engineer and contributed invaluable aid in laying the foundation of sound engineering on which the success and longevity of the mines is based.
He was author of numerous papers on different aspects of Rand mining. He received several awards from technical societies and was past president of the South African Institute on Engineers.
