Notes |
- The conduct and outcome of the Vincent case may be compared with the 1850 trial of Mrs Bourdon of Berlin for poisoning her husband. At the County of Waterloo Assizes held at the courthouse in Guelph in September 1850, Mrs Bourdon was charged with putting "corrosive sublimate" into water and soup taken by her husband who was described by several witnesses as abusive and habitually drunk. Her demure and attractive appearance was noted in the press reports as not that of a murderess. Dr John Scott testified that Mrs Bourdon (whom he had known in Berlin for six years) had come to his surgery seeking medicine to control her husband's drunkenness. Henry Smith of Berlin's new Medical Hall told the court that he had sold Mrs Bourdon various poisons to kill rats and a dog. The jury took 40 minutes to decide on a verdict of "not guilty" but the judge felt bound to conclude that he believed Mrs Bourdon "not guiltless" and that she would always bear a stain on her character.
