  STEIN, JOHN Some weeks ago, we gave a full account of the terrible accident that befell our aged townsman, Mr. Stein, by falling down stairs and of which the doctors held out slight hope of his recovery. It has been owing only to his strong constitution that he survived so long as he did. He could take but little nourishment and never rallied from the shock and passed away very peacefully, early Thursday morning, April 5, 1894. The funeral took place Saturday at 1 and was largely attended. A short service was held at the house and also at the grave, after which a funeral service was given in the German Evangelical Church, of which Mr. Stein was a devoted member, by the pastor, Rev. C. S. Finkbeiner. The following relatives from a distance were present: H. Stein and wife of London; William Stein, wife and daughter of Berlin; Adam Stein of Waterloo; William Mast and wife of Freeport; Charles Shear and wife of Aldershot; Mrs. Johnson of St. Catharines; B. Carroll of Buffalo, NY; James Perrin of Listowel. -Information from the death certificate: Aged 83 years. Occupation - cooper. -Born in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. Emigrated to Canada in 1840, spent two years at Fischer's Mills, near Hespeler, before arriving in Morriston. -Information from Our Germans Were Linked Through Puslinch Township by Chris Bowman and B. & B. Woolsey: Born in Nidda Hesse-Darmstadt, son of Heinrich Stein and Catharine Schram. Siblings were Caroline (1816-1900, Mrs. William Bernhardt, later Mrs. EckhardtHohberger) of Morriston; Christian (1813- 1901 of Fisher's Mills, later Perth Co. ; Philip (b. 1830) of Guelph; Adam (1838-1912) of Morriston, later Berlin; and William (1833-1907). Another brother, Heinrich Ludwig remained in Germany. Johann and Elizabeth Stein arrived in Morriston about 1850. Their log home was restored and is standing on lot 6 of the Calfas Survey in 2007. -Information from the death certificate of Henry George Stein: Born on May 20, 1844, son of John Stein. Occupation - cooper. Died on July 15, 1920, aged 76 years, 1 month and 26 days. Buried in Woodland Cemetery in London, ON. Informant - Henry G. Stein Jr. , 239 Colborne St. in London, his son.
